INGINE Inc.’s UK subsidiary, INGINE Wave Energy Systems Ltd. (IWES),
has successfully obtained the KKPRL (Persetujuan Kesesuaian Kegiatan
Pemanfaatan Ruang Laut), or Marine Spatial Utilisation Conformity Approval,
from the Indonesian government for its wave power project in Sumbawa,
Indonesia. The approval was granted on 28 April 2025, marking a critical
regulatory milestone in the development of the 125kW wave energy power plant.
The KKPRL is a mandatory permit required for the installation and
operation of energy infrastructure within Indonesian waters. This particular
licence was issued by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the
Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, confirming the
marine spatial suitability of the project site submitted under the name of PT
PLN Indonesia Power, a subsidiary of the Indonesian state-owned utility, PLN
and a key strategic partner of IWES.
The approved site is located off the southern coast of Sumbawa in the
province of West Nusa Tenggara, covering 0.42 hectares at a depth of 10 metres.
The KKPRL approval comes with clear conditions to ensure the protection of
local fishing rights, preservation of the marine ecosystem, and active
cooperation with nearby communities.
As part of the project's community engagement efforts, PT PLN Indonesia
Power signed a land lease agreement with local landowners on 5 February 2025,
reinforcing trust with stakeholders. The company will also oversee construction
management and the future operation of the plant.
This initiative is part of the Energy Catalyst Round 10 programme
funded by Innovate UK, the UK government’s innovation agency. With a total
project value of £1 million, the programme provides £720,000 in grant funding
to support the deployment of renewable energy solutions in developing regions.
The Sumbawa wave power plant is scheduled for completion in the first half of
2026.
Mr Jeff Lee, Managing Director of INGINE Wave Energy Systems Ltd.,
stated:
“With both the land lease and KKPRL approval in place, the groundwork
for the Sumbawa wave power plant is now firmly established. We are grateful for
the strong support from PLN Indonesia Power and the Indonesian government, and
we look forward to advancing into the construction phase together.”
This achievement marks a significant step toward delivering sustainable wave energy to remote coastal communities and accelerating the global transition to clean and resilient energy systems.
